Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan Ilhom Nematov met with the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Korea in Geneva, the Head of the Working Group on Uzbekistan’s accession to the World Trade Organization Ji-ah Paik on 12 March 2019.

According to the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan, in a detailed conversation, issues related to the restarting of the process of our country’s accession to the WTO and practical aspects of interaction with the Working Group headed by Ji-ah Paik were discussed.

Currently, the WTO unites 164 countries and 98% of the total world trade, and is also the main international body governing global trade rules between states. Uzbekistan applied for membership in the organization in 1994, but the negotiation process was almost frozen.

As Ilkhom Nematov noted at the meeting, the Development Strategy of Uzbekistan in 2017–2021, initiated by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, plays a crucial role in bringing the country’s economy to a new, innovative and industrial level of development. It was stressed that the resumption of the active phase of the process of Uzbekistan’s accession to the WTO is an integral part of the ongoing large-scale reforms in all spheres of the country’s life.

Ji-ah Paik assured that the Republic of Korea, with which Uzbekistan has signed the “Road Map” to support the process of accession to the WTO, is ready to work together in this direction.

The meeting discussed other issues of mutual interest.
